The Benefits of SEO

Your new site can be positively stunning, with high-quality products offered at affordable prices. But if no one knows about it, what’s the use? Yes, it is entirely possible to have a successful website that gains traffic from sources other than search engines (i.e. offline advertising, links from social networks, e-mail marketing, etc.) This is why SEO is merely a subset of marketing; it should not be your entire marketing plan.

That said, SEO can be an excellent way to boost the traffic of any website. More and more people are relying on search engines when interested in purchasing a product or service. Take advantage of this trend, and make a website that shows up when someone searches for your product.SEO is also a terrific way to enhance your brand credibility. Visitors trust sites that readily appear in search results.

Basic SEO Methods

The net is full of articles, quick fixes, and blogs devoted entirely to SEO. Luckily, the basic principles of SEO are pretty constant.

Search engines index web pages with robots called “spiders”, to understand what that web page is about. The goal is to make it as easy as possible for these spiders to know what your web page is about. That way, the search engine will “index” your site, and show it to users who search for terms related to your site.

There are 5 basic categories of SEO tactics. You should use a combination of these tactics to optimize your site:

Using Keywords

Brainstorm for words or phrases that an online user may search for in Google that would lead him or her to your website. These are words that relate to your site’s content, and should not include the name of your business or website. You should have 5-7 main keywords for small to mid-sized sites. There are many online keyword research tools that show you the most widely used search terms based on your site’s content, such as Google AdWords and SEO Book.

Let Search Engines Easily Locate Your Web Pages

Structure your site so search engines can quickly crawl and index your pages. Link your pages to one another with readily visible HTML hyperlinks, and give unique page titles to each page, describing the content on that specific page. Sitemaps are also useful tools for getting both search engines and human visitors to understand your site’s structure. Create a page on your website with a linkable list of your site’s pages. Then, create an XML sitemap using an online tool, and submit it to search engines.

On-page SEO

You should incorporate your keywords organically into your site’s content.Do not pack keywords into your site, and make that the surrounding content relates to your keywords. If you’re using a free website builder, make sure you have control over your site’s title and meta-description.

Links, Links, Links

SEOMoz and Google both have terrific SEO guides for beginners that will expand your knowledge on these basic concepts.

Purchasing Old Domains For Seo

It is common for experienced web masters to buy old domain names to use when creating new web sites. This can be a great idea, but there are some pitfalls to this strategy. In this article I’ll go over what one should look at before buying an old domain. I’ll even go over how and where to purchase a used domain name so you’ll know exactly what to do at the end of the article.

The first thing I want to do is debunk one of the major myths on old domain names. Domains created before 2004 do not have any special seo power to them. Matt Cutts from Google has specifically stated this in a video debunking the myth.

Buying an aged domain does however make it easier to quickly build links to it. You won’t have to worry about the search engines becoming suspicious that your domain is suddenly getting lots of links like you would with a brand new domain. Just make some updates to the site and then start your link building. The search engines will assume that the new flurry of links has been caused by the updates.

Ensure that your new pre-owned domain purchase is highly targeted with your main key word. Also, you may want to find a domain that is already ranking highly in the search engines and has a lot of links to it. Many domains already have traffic and rankings so you may want to go after them. Do not buy a site that is not listed in the search engines at all. If it is not in the search engines even for its domain name, then it is probably banned.

Take a look at the back links that are going to the used domain name. Have the previous owners been using sound seo strategies? If they have you’ll see a diverse set of links pointing to the site with strong anchor text. You’ll also want to look out for paid links. Do you want to continue to pay the companies to list your links, or will you be canceling these links.

Finding domains for auction are as easy as going to the large auction platforms. Godaddy is a great place to find auctions on domains and you can find some gems at bargain prices. You may also want to check sites like Flippa and Ebay for some obscure deals.

Make sure that you keep your newly purchased domain on the same registry as the previous owner. This will ensure that the site retains its rankings and age. Switching registry will cause you to lose the power of the domains age and possibly its rankings as well.

After you’ve setup your new website and optimized it to the fullest, you’ll want to begin link building immediately. Link building is something that needs to be done for as long as you own a site. You can do this yourself or you can hire someone to do it for you.

There are many companies with great seo packages to take advantage of. Find a professional company to work with and you could find your profits going up by leaps and bounds in less than a few months.

Search engine optimization (SEO), which is made up of the activities for pushing up the rank of your website in the search engine results pages by making some adjustments in various onsite and offsite factors, could be a confusing subject for many Internet marketers.

It is such a complicated subject and there are so many factors and pitfalls that a person could fall into never to be seen again.  Therefore, knowing some of the common mistakes that may be committed in SEO could be helpful for those who are new to this process.

Some Internet marketers usually make the mistake of not familiarizing themselves with the guidelines that are provided by the various search engines, including Bing, Yahoo, and Google.  This simple technique of knowing the different suggestions and rules given by the search engines may help a lot in avoiding the possibility of getting your website banned for violating some of their rules.

The next common error by site owners is ignoring the HTML heading tags or using them inappropriately.  These heading tags may go a long way into helping your visitors into comprehending the concepts that are discussed in your website and its organization.  The words contained in these tags are also applied by the search engine spiders to their tasks of indexing your website.

Another usual SEO error is the use of too many keywords in the SEO articles or website content.  The usual problem with these keywords is that they may not be related to each other, thus confusing the spiders on what your site is really about.  The proper strategy is to choose one keyword and to structure the various topics using this keyword and then use other terms that are related to this keyword.  It is essential to pick the keywords that are representative of the actual content of the website.

Another common SEO error is to think that the SEO process has to be performed only once.  SEO is actually an ongoing process that usually depends on trial and error and constantly adjusting the various elements to make sure that the website remains optimized.  This is vital because search engines are always improving on their algorithms and there are other website owners who are trying to optimize their sites using the same keywords.

Lastly, another SEO pitfall to avoid is concentrating on the optimization of certain elements.  It is advisable to keep an eye on the complete picture while adjusting the various elements.  The ideal situation is to get the different onsite and offsite factors to work together in providing an optimized site and by utilizing article submission services.

Backlinks authority and Google

backlinks

Hmmmm, this is a big concept and I need to emphasise it’s not clear cut. But here is what I have learned in my analysis at the Backlinks clinic:

Authority - simplified

The more authority your site has the higher you will rank on Google. Authority means that searchers trust you and your information. The good news is that authorities trusted by humans are also recognised as trustworthy by Google. A good illustration is the .edu and .gov domain extensions. These suffixes imply they are authoratitive sources of information and it’s a proven fact that in the eyes of Google backlinks from these domains to your web pages will contribute authority to your web pages. Another perfect example is Wikipedia as the entries here are largely contributed to by group of humans as opposed to a single source.

So it follows that authority is significantly influenced by the source of your backlinks and if authoritative web pages link to your web pages then you inherit their influence and in the eyes of Google you become more authoritative and hence the trust in your site by Google increases.

How Google determines what is and isn’t authoritative is undisclosed for solid reasons and falls in line with Google’s philosophy of “Do no evil”. The last thing the net needs is someone manipulating the methods that Google employs in its efforts to try and bring some order to probably the most significant technological asset of this period in history.

How not to get Backlinks

In the same vein it’s valuable to state some ‘black hat sources and methods of building backlinks that Google not only dislikes but appears to be moving aggressively to ‘classify’ as negative authorities. In no particular order of severity, the prime examples are:

  • Paid backlinks – places where people buy and sell backlinks
  • Comment spam – entries that contain links on web pages that are just not related to the main content.
  • Low quality and *duplicate content – ‘scraped’ or copied
  • Unnatural growth – there are plenty of ways that this is achievable, Google isn’t dumb. Any sudden increase in the number of backlinks is going to show up on Google’s monitoring systems, especially if it’s a recently registered domain.
  • Backlinks from ill reputed web pages – these are particularly henous as you are guilty by association - need I say more.

*There is another factor where I may be on shakey ground, but large press portals seem to get a lot of authority and I have definitely observed significant quantities of the same article over and over again on different portals with no penalties, I am still looking at this, only as a percentage of the results I am seeing defy the normal behaviors I usually expect to see. More on this is in a future article….

Article Marketing & Duplicate Content Penalty

I use a lot of private label rights content for most of my blogs, without even modifying them.  Because of this I have feared the wrath of Google through a Duplicate Content penalty.

However, it has been a few years now and I still don’t see how I could be penalized if I have phrases that are still listed in the top couple of pages of the Google search results. This of course leads me to think that there really is no Google Duplicate Content Penalty.

BTW: Just for clarity I am talking about content that is NOT stolen. I have had to deal with people stealing my content and now I use MyFreeCopyright.com to document any new content I create so I can prove I am the originator of the content.

This morning as I was sucking back my first coffee, Mmmmmm, I was scanning Bloglines, the RSS reader I use to view blog feeds I like to follow.

It’s such a great time saver.

Anyways, I came across an article about duplicate content, which always interests me, especially this one because it was about the penalty being a myth. Which makes sense to me but I was just never convinced, until this morning.

I could never figure out how I could be penalized for duplicate content and yet still have my copy of any given article rank in the top ten on Google, but I have them, so it didn’t make much sense however that didn’t stop me from still fearing penalty.

If you wonder about the duplicate content penalty or filter then take a few minutes and check out Neil Shearing’s Duplicate Content Penalty Myth video. I enjoyed it, plus it has helped to put my mind at ease about DCP.

I am glad I came across Neil’s video. I had just purchased a membership to a site that writes unique articles when perhaps I didn’t need to. However I do hire people to write for my other blogs so I will of course use the membership but
