Fitting The Gear To The Fish Your Fishing
Image via WikipediaGrowing up on the farm didn’t give me much time for fishing and I didn’t even have a fishing rod and reel, just a metal pole, some line and some hooks. For catfishing it worked great but as I got older I didn’t really want to be seen with that ole electric fence pole and bought my first fishing rod and reel as one unit.
Since those days I have bought a few Rods and still have about 5 or 6 rod and reel combos which work great for the various species I fish.
I love fly fishing here in New Brunswick and go any chance I get but the situation is not always right for a fly rod. Have you ever tried getting a cast in brook that is covered with trees and bushes?
I fish a few places where the bass just don’t get more than 16 inches long so it’s nice to have light gear in this spot, whether it’s with my spinning gear or fly fishing. It is a whole lot more fun on light action gear than if you use a really stiff rod.
Then I fish Atlantic salmon so I have to have some backbone in my fly rod for those tanks.
My chain pickerel fishing trips call for some heavier tackle and fishing gear so I have a rod and reel that can take the punishment the pickerel dish out.
We have brook trout here that a painter couldn’t color better but the majority are small, under a foot long, so light gear works best here as well.
What ever situation you are fishing in should be fun and having the right gear for the water and species your fishing is most important.
